Visitors & Day Trips
Why is there a $10 per vehicle (max 5 occupants) visitor fee now?
A typical conversation between a visitor and the office staff….
- That’s a lot of money! What a rip-off!
Really? What can you buy for around $10 today? A McDonald’s combo? A jug of beer? 4 litres of petrol? It won’t even get you into the movies!
- But it used to be free to come in here!
Well, actually it was never free. The fee was a gold coin donation per head but that word is a bit confusing because some folk read it as free.
- So what do I get for my $10 then?
Entrance into this beautiful camp with lovely established native trees on a road free of potholes, use of all amusements including the flying foxes and water slide when open, a swim in an excavated river swimming hole with rope swing and slide, a play on the BMX track and skatepark, use of the BBQs to cook your sausages, a lovingly cleaned toilet if you need one, an efficient rubbish facility and carefully landscaped grounds to walk over.
Not bad value for money really. Where else can you get all this for $10?
If you have a family of 2 adults and 2 kids this is $2:50 each. Not bad at all.
- But I only want to drop in and see my friends for half an hour.
Yes, well, others have asked us that and so we have let them in. Three hours later after enjoying all of the above for nothing they come back and give us a cheery wave on the way out.
- Well, why can’t I just walk in to see them?
For the same reason as above. If you like, we could go and get your friends to come and see you at the office here. Then you could all go to a local rest area just up the road from here complete with a long drop toilet, lots of space and what’s more, it’s free.
- So what does my $10 go towards?
This place is very expensive to upgrade and maintain. In the list above this is what it has cost: Entrance way $35K, road gravelling $1K every year, flying foxes $10K, water slide $20K, river excavation $8K every year, BMX track $2K, skatepark $18K, BBQs $2K, toilet blocks $80K, rubbish facility $10K and landscaped grounds $20K. Oh, and we have paid staff now during the busy season which is about $15K every year. Maintenance costs? About $30K, depending on what’s required, every year. Consumables and rubbish disposal around $4K every year. Power $5K every year. Compliance costs about $10 K every year.
Add all that up and $10 is not very much in comparison, is it?
- But how can you charge this fee anyway? Other campgrounds don’t charge for visitors.
Actually, many campgrounds are now charging for visitors due to the widespread abuse of their facilities. At any rate, as this is our own private property and our own business then we can set our own fees as we wish. We are not owned by the Tasman District Council or anyone else.
- You’re just going to get rich out of this, aren’t you?
The reality is that we get our personal income from working elsewhere. Marama is the office manager at Nelson Honey and Mark has just this year finished teaching part time. If we’re getting rich, then how come we decide to work elsewhere for our personal income? Doesn’t make sense, really.
- But I didn’t know about the $10 fee before I came in!
It’s clearly stated on the sign at the entrance.
- Well, we won’t be coming back here again, that’s for sure!
Thanks. That would be helpful for us as our numbers are getting rather high anyway. Fewer visitors would be easier for us to manage. By the way, we would never go to a place such as this and question the fee. We would either just pay it or go somewhere else.
- I demand to see the manager to complain! #@**%$)* &@#$!!!!!!!!
Certainly. But if you are going to threaten them with physical abuse as other visitors have done, then expect to be asked to leave. We shouldn’t have to put up with that kind of behaviour.
- But I still want to come in………
Then pay $10 and all will be sweet.
- Oh, alright!
Thank you. WE HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR DAY HERE!!
